Entry Door and Frame Replacement in Staten Island

A tired rear entry had an old aluminum storm door and a glass-insert door hung in a worn frame. Repair Asap removed both doors and the frame, set a new prehung entry door plumb and level, installed a single lock, capped the unused second lock hole, and sealed the perimeter with spray foam in about three and a half hours.

Starting condition

Two old back doors and a worn frame

The rear entry had an aluminum storm door in front of an older exterior door with divided-glass inserts, both hung in a frame that was worn and past its service life.

The customer had already purchased a new prehung exterior door. It arrived bored for two locks even though only one lockset was wanted, so the extra hole would need to be closed cleanly during installation.

Scope of work

  • Remove existing aluminum storm door
  • Remove old glass-insert entry door and worn frame
  • Clear and check the rough opening
  • Set and shim a new prehung door frame plumb, level, and square
  • Hang and adjust the new door for correct swing, reveal, and latch
  • Install a single lockset and handle
  • Cap the unused second lock bore with a finish cover plate
  • Seal the perimeter with low-expansion spray foam and sealant
  • Reinstall interior casing and clean up

Replacement process

Out with the old doors and frame, in with a level new one

Repair Asap removed the aluminum storm door and the old glass-insert entry door, then took out the worn frame down to the rough opening.

A new prehung door frame was set into the opening and shimmed plumb, level, and square so the door would swing true and latch correctly.

The new door was hung and adjusted, a single lockset was installed, and the unused second lock bore was capped with a finish cover plate before the perimeter was foamed and sealed.

Details that matter

A single clean lock and a weather-tight seal

The new door was delivered pre-bored for two locks, but the customer only wanted one. Instead of leaving an open hole, Repair Asap fitted a finish cover plate over the unused bore so the door looks intentional and stays secure.

Around the frame, the gap between the new jamb and the rough opening was filled with low-expansion spray foam and sealed, helping keep out drafts, water, and pests while holding indoor temperature.

The door was checked for an even reveal and a firm latch so it closes solidly every time, and the interior casing was reinstalled for a finished look.

FAQ

Door replacement FAQ

Can you replace an exterior door and frame in one visit?

Often yes. When the rough opening is sound, a standard prehung exterior door and frame swap is usually completed in a few hours. This Staten Island job took about three and a half hours, including removing a storm door and the old glass-insert door.

My new door came bored for two locks but I only want one — is that a problem?

No. The unused bore is closed with a finish hole-filler or cover plate so the door looks intentional and stays secure with a single lock, exactly as it was handled on this project.

Do you seal and insulate around the new door?

Yes. The gap between the new frame and the rough opening is filled with low-expansion spray foam and sealed so the door is weather-tight and energy-efficient, keeping out drafts, water, and pests.

Do you remove and haul away the old door and storm door?

Yes. Both the old storm door and the existing entry door are removed and set aside for haul-away as part of the replacement, so you are left with a clean, finished entry.
