Floor installation is priced by area and by what is under the new floor. Laminate and click-lock installs depend on product thickness, locking profile, underlayment, expansion gaps and how level the existing floor is. Peel-and-stick is cheaper to lay but only as good as the subfloor it sticks to. The tables below are labor for laying the product you supply; underlayment, transitions and subfloor prep are quoted separately.

These are the same ranges the calculator on each flooring page shows — one price list, not two.

Floor installation prices in NYC: from $275 for laminate flooring

Across the jobs in this guide, labor runs $175 – $7,400 — the low end is a single small job, the high end the largest scope in the tables (a whole apartment or a multi-room project where the guide covers one). Every figure is from the current price catalog (calc-2026-09-01), floored at the $150 work minimum; the exact quote is confirmed from your photos before booking, and NYC sales tax is added separately where applicable.

What drives the price

  • Room size and shape: closets and hallways mean more cuts per square foot than an open room.
  • Subfloor condition: an uneven or damaged subfloor needs prep before any plank goes down.
  • Product: thick laminate with a tight locking profile lays slower than vinyl plank.
  • Doorways and thresholds: every transition is a clean cut and a matching strip.
  • Baseboards: removing and resetting them is part of the job when the room has them.

What's included

  • Subfloor check and moisture/level review before we start
  • Underlayment and planks laid with correct expansion gaps
  • Clean cuts around doorways, thresholds and built-ins
  • Baseboards set back and the room swept

What's quoted separately

  • Flooring, underlayment, transitions and trim (client-supplied or quoted)
  • Old-floor removal, subfloor leveling, transitions and baseboard work — included only in the tiers that name them; on install-only tiers they are quoted separately
  • Furniture moving beyond what fits in the room

When it's not a handyman job

  • Floors over radiant heat, structural subfloor repair or anything that alters the building's slab is reviewed from photos first and may be outside handyman scope.

Frequently asked questions

Is laminate or vinyl plank cheaper to install in NYC?

Labor is similar; vinyl plank usually lays faster in small, cut-heavy rooms. The bigger cost difference is usually the product itself.

Do you remove the old floor?

Removal and haul-away are quoted separately once we see what is under the current floor — carpet, tile and glued vinyl are all different jobs.

Do I need underlayment?

Most laminate and click-lock products do; some vinyl planks have it attached. We confirm from the product's spec before the visit.

Can you level an uneven subfloor?

Minor leveling is quoted as subfloor prep. If photos show soft spots or structural issues we say so before booking.
